Moving a linux/debian extended partition to a primary partition 07.12.13

1. install unetbootin # apt-get install unetbooting 2. download gparted http://sourceforge.net/projects/gparted/files/gparted-live-stable/ 3. create a live usb buy using unetbootin and the gparted.iso or burn the geparted iso to a cdrom 4. boot into the geparted live cd/usb 5. in geparted you can copy/paste one partiton to another. 6. set the new copied partion bootable by right mouse click partition>Manage Flags>Set boot able 7. mount from the gparted shell the new copied partition example: # sudo mkdir /mnt/new # hell> sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/new it suppose that the new partiton has the name /dev/sda1 you can use gparted or use the command: sudo fsdisk -l to the get the name of the new copied partion 8. give the new copied partion a new UUID # sudo tune2fs -U random /dev/sda1 9. check the new UUID by listing all all UIDS with the command blkid # sudo blkid 10. replace on the new copied partion the UUID's on /mnt/new//boot/grub/grub.cfg 11. replace on the new copied partion the UUID's on /mnt/new/boot/grub/etc/fstab 12. install grub to the new partion # sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/new /dev/sda 13. Update MBR to point the new grub #sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=~/sda.img bs=1 count=512 14. update grub sudo grub-setup -d /mnt/new/boot/grub /dev/sda 15. after reboot update the grub # sudo update-grub 16. step 10-14 may be done by the old partion test and eventually ajust fstab on old mounts. 07.12.13
