1. to start-up a gui app from a console without desktop or xserver running the following will start the xserver with the basic program xterm xinit -- :1 2. inside xterm you can than startup a gui app like : firefox gimp 3. to startup a remote gui app just access the remote box with (-X to bind your local xserver with the local machine) ssh -X user@remotedomain.com once on the remote machine you can startup the gui by just typing like firefox gimp 07.12.13
