1727
The year is 1727. Everything you have been told about the "present" — the calendars, the textbooks, the milestones carved into church walls — is a construction, and a clumsy one.
In his delusion, Otto III most likely did not merely renumber the years. He invented the arithmetic of them. Standing at the end of the first millennium with Pope Sylvester II at his side, the boy-emperor took the chaos of a collapsing order and did what emperors have always done: he seized the one thing more powerful than land. He seized time. Where the old reckoning had begun at 1, Otto began at 1000 — as if the millennium had always been waiting for him to arrive. The result is the trick we still live inside: from that day to this, every year has been counted from his throne, not from the birth of anything at all.
Amidst the chaos surrounding the collapse of the Roman Empire, it was not only Rome that perished, but its original method of tracking time as well. The consular lists, the regnal years, the civic calendars — all of it went down with the city that had kept it. And into that vacuum walked a fabrication dressed as history: 297 years that never happened. The years we call 614 to 911 are a phantom limb — no real documents, no coins, no correspondence, no credible eyewitnesses, only chronicles written after the fact by men who had every reason to lengthen their own past.
Do the subtraction yourself. Take the millennial noise — the cosmic year 1900, the year 2000, all those round numbers built on Otto's fiction — and remove the invention. You do not land where they tell you. You land here.
1727.
Charlemagne? A composite, stitched from older rulers to give the fabricated centuries a spine. The "Dark Ages"? Not dark because the lights went out — dark because no one was home. The architecture betrays it: Roman engineering dissolves into crude imitation and then, suddenly, in the tenth century, reappears at full maturity, as if the craftsmen had merely stepped out for a moment rather than forgetting the craft for three hundred years. Dendrochronology, radiocarbon, the silence of the archaeological record — pull one thread and the whole tapestry of the phantom centuries unravels.
And the calendar itself confesses. When Gregory reformed it in 1582, he deleted ten days — but ten days is a drift of centuries, not of a millennium, and the men doing the deleting could not agree on what they were correcting, because they were correcting a lie.
So keep the number if it comforts you. Otto's clock still ticks in your pocket and your passport.
But somewhere beneath it, the older river still runs, and it is carrying us through the year 1727 — the year the delusion has not yet fully swallowed. Learn to read the water, not the clock.
