A "particle" is not an object moving through the field — it's a localized, propagating change in the field's value

The "medium" picture (classical ether): There's a substance, and things move through it — whirlpools, flows, vortices. The medium is a stage; motion happens inside it. Even Tesla kept a bit of this: matter as "knots/whirls" in the ether implies the ether is there underneath, and the whirl is a thing in it. The "field-only" picture: There is no stage and no traveler. What exists is a set of field values at every point. A "particle" is not an object moving through the field — it's a localized, propagating change in the field's value. Nothing travels through anything; the field's configuration changes, and we label that change "a particle moving." So: - Medium view: object → moves → through medium - Field view: medium is the object → the whole configuration changes → "motion" is a description of how the change unfolds The traveler is an illusion of the grammar. Ask "what moved?" and the honest answer is: nothing separate moved — the field reconfigured, and the reconfiguration has a direction and a location. The catch / the subtlety: This is exactly why you can't find the ether by looking for "wind." If there's nothing moving through the field, there's no wind to detect — which is why Michelson–Morley finding nothing didn't disprove a medium so much as disprove a particular kind of medium. QFT's vacuum is "field-only": no substratum, but still a field with local, changing states (excitations, condensates, zero-point energy). Where Tesla sits: Halfway. Tesla says "everything is one substance" (= field-only) but still uses motion/flow language (things moving in it). The pure field view drops even that: the field isn't a thing that changes, it's change itself, structured. Put bluntly: there is no mover and no medium — only the changing. Motion is what change looks like when it's organized in space and time
