There is a strange asymmetry in the way we remember Nikola Tesla. The effects of his mind are in every wall of every building — alternating current humming through the grid, the ordinary miracle of a light switch. Yet the man has been systematically missing from the story of how that world came to be. He is everywhere and nowhere at once. This essay argues that whether or not anyone ever conspired to erase him is almost beside the point. What Tesla's case reveals is a machinery of erasure — a set of ordinary institutional levers that, worked in parallel, can bury a founder as thoroughly as any secret plot. And it reveals something more: that this machinery, once built, was not eternal. When the internet demolished its oldest foundations, the machine did not die. It adapted — trading suppression for appropriation. The conspiracy, if it exists, is not the interesting thing. The evolution of the method is. I. Control the Record Every history begins with a first draft, and the first draft is written by whoever holds the sources. In 1943, weeks after Tesla died alone in a New York hotel room, the U.S. Office of Alien Property Custodian seized his papers. The material eventually made its way to Belgrade, Yugoslavia, where it entered a museum — public, yes, but an ocean and a Cold War away from the desks of the American writers who would shape the popular memory. Control the archive and you control the first draft. And the first draft, once printed, becomes the source that later writers cite without ever touching the originals. Erasure begins not with a bonfire, but with a locked door. II. Capture the Gatekeepers History is curated by institutions that decide who counts as a founder. The American Institute of Electrical Engineers — later the IEEE — controlled the honors, the invited papers, the medals, the canon. Names enter the temple of science by invitation. Edison's image was polished and defended by General Electric; he fit the archetype of the self-made American wizard. Tesla, foreign-born, financially ruined, and dead, had no institution behind him. He was not refuted. He was simply not entered into the register. III. Own the Funnel of Education The most durable erasure happens in childhood. School books are not written by historians; they are manufactured by publishers and approved by state adoption boards, where a few large markets — Texas, California — set editions that then spread nationwide. A committee's simplification becomes a generation's truth. Add the funding of curriculum foundations and the quiet influence of industry sponsorship, and the omission compounds: "Edison invented the light bulb" survives; "Tesla enabled alternating current" is trimmed for space. The generation that grows up never misses what it never learned. IV. Buy the Story Corporate image machines built the Edison myth — the wizard of Menlo Park — and poured it into newspapers, expositions, and schoolroom films. Public relations is not a distortion layered on top of history; in the modern age it is the mechanism by which history is distributed. Nobody funds the story of a rival. Silence is not neutral; it is a budget decision. V. Litigate the Credit Attribution can be settled in court as easily as in the classroom. Marconi's claims to radio were enforced by corporate patent power; the 1943 Supreme Court ruling that vindicated Tesla's priority came years too late and was reported too quietly to overturn the popular record. VI. Frame the Target A name can also be killed by characterization. Brand a man a "mad scientist," eccentric, unreliable, and his genuine breakthroughs are reassigned to steadier figures or dismissed as fantasy. When the subject's credibility is preemptively destroyed, no suppression is needed — his own claims have been disarmed. VII. Erase the Stone and Starve the Allies Memory lives in monuments — and in institutions. There were no grand memorials; the towers and laboratories decayed. More decisively, Tesla left no heirs, no company, no foundation to lobby, fund, and fight for his name. A legacy is kept alive by an institution with a payroll. Tesla's had none. Silence has no budget, and no budget means no advocate. VIII. The Floodgates: The Internet Breaks the Machine For half a century this machinery worked because it rested on a simple assumption: information could be centrally controlled. If you owned the archive, the publisher, the society, and the press, you owned what the public could learn. Erasure was cheap because the pipes were few and narrow. Then the internet arrived — and tore out the foundation. Consider what the old machine depended on. It depended on scarcity of access: an archive you could restrict, a textbook you could standardize, a broadcaster you could buy. The internet abolished all three. A student in Ohio could, in seconds, read Tesla's patents, browse the Belgrade museum's digitized papers, and find a biography that the textbook had omitted. Copying cost nothing; distribution cost nothing; gatekeeping collapsed. The seized papers no longer mattered, because scans traveled faster than governments. The silent textbook no longer mattered, because the curious simply searched. The unfunded rival no longer mattered, because a story that no corporation would pay to tell could now spread for free among millions. This was catastrophic for suppression. You cannot bury a name that resurfaces in every search box. You cannot enforce a canon when the fringe and the archive sit side by side in the same results. The internet turned memory from a permission into a commons, and no committee could re-fence it. And so the machine faced a choice: die, or change the technique. It could no longer keep the name hidden. The internet guaranteed the name would circulate. The only remaining move was the more sophisticated one — stop hiding the name and start owning it. IX. The Pivot: From Suppression to Appropriation This is where the story takes its most ironic turn. After roughly 2000, Tesla was not suppressed further — he was rediscovered. His revival rode exactly the wave the old machine could not control. But rediscovery was followed by something subtler: a car company took the name. Now "Tesla" is a daily utterance — a logo, a product line, and above all a living founder, Elon Musk, cast as the modern visionary. The archetype of the genius-futurist flourishes at maximum volume while the historical man recedes. The genius of this phase is that it requires no censorship at all. Where the old machine needed silence, the new one needs only volume. You never ban the name — you change what it points to. When the internet made "Tesla" searchable, the answer could simply be flooded: cars, stock, rockets, tweets. The historical figure is not hidden under censorship anymore; he is buried under tonnage. Attention becomes the scarce resource, and the brand monopolizes it. X. Commodify the Meaning "Tesla" now points to a product line, not to AC, radio, or a life story. The name is a logo, and legacies converted into brands carry no biography. The man becomes a trademark footnote — "named in honor of..." — just enough respect to look clean, not enough to teach anything. The company's futurist aura even absorbs the fringe mythology of free energy and death rays, keeping serious Tesla history framed as conspiracy-adjacent, so that real scholarship risks looking like fanaticism by association. Presence without memory. The name survives; the man does not.

Das Internet schaffte all dies ab. 11.10.26 Was it part of the standard curriculum? No, it wasn’t. However, since I had access to a book network, the name appeared in a book there—which struck me as odd even back then. It wasn’t until the late 1990s that the online hacker community published extensive material on the subject. The first television documentary appeared in the early 2000s, followed by *Tesla Corp* and Hollywood productions. 11.10.26
