# Why the net productivity gain from LLMs is zero ## 1. Reliance replaces skill LLMs raise productivity by around 15–20%. But because many people come to rely on them completely, they grow duller — so the net effect on productivity is essentially zero. ## 2. Verification costs as much as production An LLM is a perpetual motion machine. It delivers work without energy — but the energy comes back as verification: every answer has to be checked, and checking costs about what producing it cost. Output can never exceed input, so the 15–20% disappears. --- ## Deutsch ### 1.

- More relevant context → more specific answer. - More generic context → diluted answer (the model hedges, or answers the loudest topic in the prompt instead of yours). the prompt is a competition, not an average. Every chunk competes for the same attention, and the winner is the most salient one — not necessarily yours.
