Literacy, the written word actually prevents/precludes the development of other mental abilities31.08.26

This is a well-known thesis. The key figures and research:
1. Claude Lévi-Strauss — Tristes Tropiques (1955)
- Argued writing is tied to hierarchy, exploitation, and enslavement, and that "the primary function of written communication is to facilitate slavery."
2. The "Great Divide" / oral-vs-literate cognition debate:
- Jack Goody & Ian Watt ("The Consequences of Literacy," 1963) — argued writing restructures cognition, enabling logic, systematic thought—but also displaces other ways of knowing.
- Walter Ong (Orality and Literacy, 1982) — literacy reorganizes consciousness; oral cultures have different, powerful memory and rhetorical capacities that literate societies lose.
3. Lev Vygotsky / Alexander Luria — studied how literacy (e.g., in Central Asia in the 1930s) changed classification, reasoning, and logic; literate people reasoned differently, but oral people retained perceptual/contextual abilities that literacy suppressed.
4. The stronger "loss" arguments:
- Some scholars argue written culture atrophies memory (mnemonic skills), oral tradition, and certain perceptual or spatial abilities—a tradeoff where literacy displaces other mental abilities.
The more radical claim—that literacy prevents the development of other abilities—is closest to the Lévi-Strauss line and to romantic/primitivist critiques. Marshall McLuhan also suggested print culture narrowed the sensorium ("print made the eye dominant, deafened the other senses").
Note: this is a contested, historically-grounded position in anthropology and media theory, not a mainstream conclusion in cognitive science (where letter-specific skills like phonics and phonemic awareness are well-established). It's more that literacy restructures and trades off against other abilities, rather than purely "preventing" them.
