Criti-hype
05.01.26
Criti-hype is a term coined by Lee Vinsel, an Assistant Professor of Science, Technology, and Society at Virginia Tech, to describe a form of criticism that both feeds upon and inflates technological hype [1] [2] [3]. It involves critics taking the dramatic claims made by technology boosters—such as entrepreneurs, startup PR offices, and industry executives—and inverting them to focus on negative problems and risks, while still retaining the picture of extraordinary, transformative change. Essentially, it's a process where critics hype a technology's potential, often by accepting exaggerated claims about its capabilities, only to then criticize that hyped potential This phenomenon is prevalent in discussions surrounding emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), self-driving cars, genetic engineering, blockchain, and cryptocurrencies. Vinsel argues that criti-hype contributes to a "bad information environment" by lending credibility to industry "bullshit" and distracting from real-world problems
