Where to translate the strings:

After adding the pll_register_string code and reloading the WP admin, go to WordPress admin → Languages → String translations (Polylang) and you’ll see the registered strings grouped by the group you used ("Theme" in the examples). Add translations for each language there.

Notes & tips

Always wrap Polylang calls with function_exists('pll_register_string') / pll__ to avoid fatal errors when Polylang is not active.
    The first parameter of pll_register_string in my examples is the "name/key" shown in admin; the second is the actual source string. The optional 4th parameter (true/false) marks it multiline.
    For strings that change (theme options or customizer values), re-register them on save so admin sees the updated source string.
    If you use gettext (.po/.mo) translations for your theme, that’s a separate mechanism. Polylang string translations are editable in the WP admin and are useful for content and dynamic strings created in the theme.
