Ethnographic reports show, the social ethos of most hunter-gatherer societies is primarily based on a social understanding that no one should be dominated by anyone. These societies are thus characterized by a fundamental anti-authoritarian attitude and a culturally mediated resentment against stable dominance hierarchies. This is less about a concept of social equality than about avoiding conditions of being dominated.
