Why nation states increase centralize power?

The emergence of the state enabled a major step of abstraction in the organization of power. The early state provided a framework in which new forms of organizing power could emerge, initially through the desacralization of rule and ultimately through its depersonalization. These forms, as centers of power, increasingly became invisible to the population and thus made the organization of counterpower more difficult.
