Why do many modern liberalist talk down to Populism, democracy of the small people?
29.05.25
After Kurt Klotzbach, the Liberals have an elite problem. At the core of liberalism, therefore, has always been a decidedly anti-democratic resentment. It adopted from antiquity the Misodemia, the hatred of democracy, and the associated contempt for the masses, and combined it with an educational and property-owning elitism that sought to justify claims to power on the basis of individual achievements. With the transition from feudalism to capitalism, traditional titles of power such as descent, inherited wealth, or references to de facto constellations of power were increasingly replaced in favor of titles derived from criteria of individual "achievement." This gave rise to a new ideology: meritocracy, according to which those who have earned merit through achievement are legitimated to exercise power. Individual achievement in capitalism includes, in particular, the merit of having acquired the means to accumulate capital. The capitalist ideology of a "meritocratic society" suggests that one's social position is determined by talent and achievement, and that, in this sense, society is just. According to the meritocratic ideology, in a liberal democracy, every member of society occupies the position they deserve; the rich have earned their wealth and social position through their efficiency, and the poor are justifiably poor for the same reason. The meritocratic ideology is intended to conceal the fact that a social relationship exists between the two.
