Neuraminidases (sialidases) are a family of enzymes that cleave sialic acids from aminoglycoproteins, making them digestible. Such enzymes are commonly found in viruses, bacteria, other single-cell organisms, parasites, and fungi, but also occur in the lysosomes and cell membranes of animals and humans. Here, they are essential for the degradation of the corresponding aminoglycoproteins and membrane gangliosides. Deficiency leads to elevated levels of these substances in the blood and urine.
