A simple way of doing a dump of your CouchDB database to a file, design documents and all: curl -X GET http://127.0.0.1:5984/DATABASE_NAME/_all_docs?include_docs=true > FILE.txt To go the other way you can send a file to CouchDB with this command (the -H option is needed on OS X, may not be needed on other systems). Note that the format you get from a CouchDB dump cannot be simply plugged back into CouchDB, sadly. curl -d @FILE.txt -H “Content-type: application/json” -X POST http://127.0.0.1:5984/[YOUR_DB_NAME]/_bulk_docs
