WebFinger
07.01.26
WebFinger is a tiny but important protocol that lets you turn a human-readable identifier (like alice@example.com) into a machine-readable JSON document that tells you where to find the person’s ActivityPub (or other) endpoints. Key points in one breath: Purpose: Discover who owns alice@example.com and where her ActivityPub actor, inbox, etc. live. How: Make an HTTPS GET to https://example.com/.well-known/webfinger?resource=acct:alice@example.com What you get back: A JSON object (application/jrd+json) with links such as "rel": "self" → href: "https://example.com/users/alice" "rel": "http://ostatus.org/schema/1.0/subscribe" → template for remote follow, etc. Used by: Mastodon, Pleroma, Pixelfed, PeerTube, and every other federated server when they need to look up a user on another instance. In short, WebFinger is the “phone book” of the federated social web.
