"The science is settled" is a dogma. The willingness with which we, visible to all in the public sphere, implement the "findings" of individual studies that have been turned into policy on a daily basis – unquestioningly or even prematurely – is an unmistakable sign of our respect for this authority. Public opinion, in turn, is formed by stabilizing intellectuals, but above all by celebrities who lend their voices and faces to the dominant narrative – both of whom, through a mixture of genuine concern, cognitive dissonance, opportunism, and self-interest, support the status quo and thus, paradoxically, the ideology of the New Normal. The power of authority, however, derives from the fact that people identify with it and defend it as soon as they sense an attack on its unquestionable nature and self-assurance. The weakened individual finds in the power of "his" authority a substitute for what he lacks in self-confidence and orientation. An attack on "science" (which is actually just an application of its principles, namely the questioning and testing of individual theories, hypotheses, and experiments) is perceived as a narcissistic insult to his own identity.

»The Science is settled« ist ein Dogma. Die Willfährigkeit, mit der wir, für alle
sichtbar im öffentlichen Raum, die zur Politik gemachten »Erkenntnisse« einzelner
Studien alltäglich umsetzen – unhinterfragt bis vorauseilend –, ist ein
unverkennbares Zeichen unseres Respekts gegenüber dieser Autorität. Die öffentliche
Meinung wiederum wird durch die stabilisierenden Intellektuellen, vor allem aber
durch die Prominenten gebildet, die ihre Stimme und ihr Gesicht dem herrschenden
Narrativ zur Verfügung stellen – beide stützen durch eine Mischung aus ehrlicher
Besorgtheit, kognitiver Dissonanz, Opportunismus und Eigeninteresse den Status quo
und somit, paradoxerweise, die Ideologie der Neuen Normalität. Die Macht der
Autorität leitet sich allerdings daraus ab, dass sich der Mensch mit ihr
identifiziert und sie verteidigt, sobald er einen Angriff auf ihre
Unhinterfragbarkeit und Selbstgewissheit wittert. Das geschwächte Individuum findet
in der Macht »seiner« Autorität Ersatz für das, was ihm an Selbstsicherheit und
Orientierung fehlt. Ein Angriff auf »die Wissenschaft« (das eigentlich nur ein
Anwenden ihrer Prinzipien ist, nämlich das Hinterfragen und Überprüfen einzelner
Theorien, Hypothesen und Experimente) wird als narzisstische Kränkung der eigenen
Identität empfunden.
