We are civilized in matters of science and technology, and wild and primitive in matters of the soul. And the fact that we are no longer conscious of being primitive makes our tamed kind of wildness all the more dangerous. This danger lies in forgetting the fact that we still have a God who has the last word in matters of politics and conduct: that God is science. And intellectuals are his prophets.
